Buttercream icing

This is a basic recipe for soft icing that you can add your own flavourings and coourings to. Find more on Kidspot New Zealand's recipe finder


  • 200g butter, softened
  • 2 1/2 cups icing sugar mixture
  • 2 tbsp milk


With an electric mixer, beat the butter until it is pale and fluffy.

Gradually beat in the icing mixture, half a cup at a time.

Use the milk at the end to thin the mixture. You will notice it makes it puff up.


  • You can add a number of flavourings and colourings to this mixure like vanilla or orange juice. You can also use the flavourings you buy in cake decorating section.
  • Make sure you beat the butter well to begin with.
