Little chef hat
Kids will rush to the kitchen and bake up a storm in this adorable little chef’s hat by Stephanie Phillips from mon petit poppet. Bon appétit!
- Plain fabric 18 x 59cm for hat band
- Lightweight interfacing 18 x 49cm
- Circle of fabric 46cm diameter
- 20cm strip of 1.3cm bias binding
- 2 x 6cm strips of 1.9cm Velcro
- Embroidery thread & water soluble pencil
TIP To fit head 48cm–53cm, use 6mm seam, zigzag or overlock raw edges. Font used for the band is Blackadder ITC, size 60.
Measure down 5.5cm from centre of hat band. Using water soluble pencil, rule a horizontal line. Print the words 'Bon Appétit' in your chosen font and trace words onto the line. Embroider using three strands of embroidery thread. Remove pencil line with a damp cloth.
Iron interfacing to the wrong side of the hat band. With the wrong sides facing, fold band in half lengthwise, press then unfold. Iron each long edge under 1.5cm. Unfold.
Lay band flat with embroidery facing up. In the top right hand corner, vertically pin and stitch 6cm of Velcro (hook side) 2cm from long edge and 1.5cm from short edge. At the bottom left, horizontally pin and stitch 6cm of Velcro (loop side) 2cm from long edge and 1.5cm from short edge. Attach a second loop piece 1.5cm above.
Right sides together, fold band in half lengthwise. Pin and stitch short edges only, starting at the folded edge and stopping at the crease. Clip corners, turn right side out, push out corners. Fold open the long edges at creases, ready for top stitching. Press.
Fold patterned fabric circle in half and cut a slit from one edge towards the centre for 8cm. Encase raw edge of slit opening with bias binding. Pin bias binding and stitch close to outside edge of the binding.
Using longest stitch length, machine sew around circle, 6mm from the edge then again 1.3cm from the edge, beginning and ending at slit opening. Gently pull bobbin threads, gathering the circle until it is the same length as the hat band.
With all right sides facing out, find centre of the hat band and centre of the circle. Sandwich circle edge between the hat band so gathering stitches are just covered, aligning centres and matching band ends with each side of the slit opening. Pin well, adjusting gathers evenly. Top stitch very close to band edge, easing the band if necessary. Et voilà! C’est fini!
