Sleeping safely with your baby

No matter where your baby sleeps, you should follow the safe sleeping guidelines to ensure that when your baby sleeps he is safe. 

The Ministry of Health recommends that in the first year of life, babies should have their own sleeping space. If you want to sleep with your baby you should follow these guidelines:

  • Don't put your baby where he can fall out of bed, but don't put him against pillows or a wall either. The safest alternative isa firm flat mattress on the floor with no small gaps between the mattress and the walls or furniture.
  • If you choose to sleep in your bed, the safest option is a Pepi-pod or similar. 
  • Don't sleeping together on the couch - your baby can suffocate by getting trapped between you and the cushions.If you are overweight 
  • Don't use anything soft on the mattress (wool underlay, quilted mattress protector). Make sure your mattress is firm and that the bottom sheet it fitted and snug. 
  • Don't use heavy quilts or duvets - lightweight blankets are best.
  • Don't let the bedding cover your baby's head. Keep them tucked in down low on the bed.
  • Don't let your baby sleep with his head on the pillows.
  • Ensure your baby is sleeping on his back. 
  • Don't put your baby between two parents - it is more likely that he'll slip under the covers that way. Instead, sleep him beside his mother (mothers are more aware of their child)
  • Ensure your sleepwear is free from strings or ribbons and tie up long hair.
  • Do not drink alcohol, use drugs, or take sleeping plls if you are sharing a bed with a baby or child. If you are very tired do not share a bed with your baby.
