Have a fun family movie night at home
Most families are living on a budget, and let's face it, a family trip to the cinemas when you're buying tickets, popcorn and treats for everyone can turn into a pricey affair. But that doesn't mean you have to miss out on the latest releases. Bring the movies to you with these cheap ideas for creating a fun movie night at home.
Make it official and plan some fun
Setting a date and time will make your movie night into an 'event', and an event is something to look forward to! Write your special night on the family calendar and let younger kids create invitations for everyone attending. Give every family member something fun to do - smaller children make great ushers and popcorn sellers, and the 'projectionist' can man the remote and pick the first film. Why not help the kids create a Box Office out of - what else - a box? Kids can sell hand-made tickets and popcorn from their box office window.
Choose a theme, set the scene
Choose movies to a set theme to give your movie night a fun flavour. Some fun theme ideas are: wild west, superheroes, Christmas, fairytales, musicals, or animation. Everyone can dress up and pretend to be their favourite movie characters, and snacks and decorations can be themed too! Then you're ready to set the scene by creating a home cinema in your loungeroom, with comfy beanbags and cushions to laze on, dim lights, and cardboard popcorn boxes (you can purchase these at most supermarkets). Try Christmas lights or lamps for a nice atmosphere, or drag out the sleeping bags for a family slumber party!
Speed clean and switch off
Nothing puts a dampener on relaxing than the thought of housework still to do. Avoid that sinking feeling by having the whole family pitch in on a 15 minute speed-clean before you relax on the couch together. Dishes can be done, rubbish taken out, and toys tidied away in a matter of minutes when there's a fun goal in mind! And just like in the real cinema, be sure to switch off mobile phones and turn your answering machine on. Let nothing short of an emergency interrupt your family time - your family will appreciate that they have your full attention. Remember, movie night is a special family occasion.
Movie food made easy
To avoid aching bellies full of snack food and drinks, fill up on a proper dinner before you begin your movie night. You can make it quick and simple and even avoid takeaway - try this kids nachos recipe or enjoy classic movie food with our kid-friendly pocket pizzas. And don't forget to make lots of yummy popcorn.
Schedule an intermission
Most children will need a toilet break during the evening, so make time for a short intermission. Everyone can use the bathroom, stretch their legs, or make a trip to the 'snacks stand' (fridge or pantry) for more supplies. This might be a good time to put the smaller children to bed, and settle back in to enjoy some more teenage or grown-up viewing later in the evening.
Jump into jammies
Get everyone comfy and snug in their pyjamas before settling in to watch the movie-fest - they'll appreciate elastic waistbands when they've gorged themselves on too much nacho popcorn! Plus, everyone's ready for bed when the movies are over. All that's left to do now is enjoy your special family movie night!
