How to play Two-up for kids
The real version of Two-up is a gambling game that is only legal on Anzac Day. But this version of how to play Two-up doesn't involve any gambling. It's just a simple game of heads and tails that will amuse your children no end.
What you need:
- 7 x fake gold coins per player (so you don't get sprung for gambling)
- 1 x flat-sided wooden spoon
- 1 x big bowl
- 1 x small bowl per player
- 1 x mat or rug to use as 'the ring'
In real Two-up there is a ring. In this Two-up there is a mat or rug. All coins must land on the mat or rug to be considered 'in play.'
It also helps to paint a white X on the tail-side of each coin, to make things simpler to call when they land. They also do this in real Two-up.
Here are the basic rules of play in our Two-up for kids:
The "Spinner" is the person who tosses the coins. Each player will have a turn of three tosses each as the spinner.
The "Caller" is the person who calls out heads or tails, predicting how the coins will land.
Start with all the coins in the big bowl. Spinner takes two coins from the bowl, places them tail-side up on the wooden spoon. Then the spinner throws the coins into the air. In real Two-up they must spin twice and be thrown at least two metres upward, in our Two-up we're not so fussy about that.
The Caller calls "heads" or "tails." If for example the Caller says, "heads" here is what happens:
If the coins land one head up and one tail up, the spinner must spin again.
If the coins land two tails up, the Spinner wins those coins and puts them in his/her bowl.
If the coins land two heads up, the Caller wins those coins and puts them in his/her bowl.
Continue like this, alternating Spinner and Caller, when all the coins are gone from the big bowl, count up how many coins each player has in their bowl.
The player with the most coins wins the game.
The coins must land on the mat.
