Halloween craft party game: Furry spider pinata
There's nothing quite like a pinata to pop when you're at a party. But a spider? Excellent! This creative craft decoration doubles as a cool Halloween activity for kids to create and crush!
What you need:
- a balloon
- PVA glue
- plastic container for glue
- black crepe paper
- black paint
- black glitter scrapbook paper
- white glitter foam sheets
- googly eyes, assorted sizes
- 24 black pipe cleaners
- white satin ribbon
- sticky tape
- craft knife
- Halloween themed lollies and treats
Step 1. Blow up your balloon and tear up your newspaper. Cover your paper in glue, sticking to the balloon as you go. Make sure there is plenty of glue on the newspaper. You want this to really stick. Continue for a minimum of four layers but more if you want a harder pinata. Leave a newspaper-free circle around the tie of the balloon. Make sure it's big enough for your largest Halloween treat to fit through. Leave this to dry for one to two days.
Step 2. While you're waiting for the balloon to set, make your legs. Wind three the pipe cleaners together to make one long stem. Cut strips from the crepe paper, fringing the edges. Wind the fringed crepe paper around the pipe cleaners and secure with tape. Repeat for the rest of the six legs. (Legs seven and eight will come later)
Step 3. Once the balloon is set, paint it black. Cut more fringed strips from the crepe paper and wrap around the pinata/balloon starting at the bottom (the large end of the balloon). Apply a thin layer of PVA to secure in place, being careful not to stick the fringing, just the solid piece of the crepe paper. Once you hit the halfway mark, it's time to add the legs. Secure in place with the tape and cover any visible tape with the fringing. Keep working upwards until you're done!
Step 4. Once you're about 5cm from the top, fill your pinata with the treats. Make a small hole each side of the large hole with the craft knife and thread a pipe cleaner through these holes and wind the wire together. This can be used to tie your ribbon to and hang. Cover the large hole with sticky tape and then with more crepe fringing.
Step 5. Cut a circle from the glitter card. Add your face details. This is where the creativity comes right into play. Plenty of assorted sized eyes and the white foam can be cut to create the mouth. Don't forget to add some fringing around the edges so it ties in with the spider body.
Make a "U" shape out of a pipe cleaner and wrap fringing up both sides to meet in the middle. Stick to the back of the face. These are legs seven and eight!
Step 6. Lay the pinata down so the back is flat and stick the face on with PVA. Once it's dry, it's ready to hang.
