Compassionate traveller goes viral for helping a mum
Travelling with a baby is something all parents dread. Travelling next to a baby is something most travelers dread. But in a heart-warming story that's going viral, a plane ride with a baby turned into a touching experience for mum and fellow passenger alike.
Rebekka Garvison thought she was in for a stressful 5:30am flight with her newborn as soon as she saw the “annoyed” look of the couple that were sitting in the seats next to her. Things compounded when her newborn baby Rylee, probably sensing her mums stress, started to cry just as the plane began to taxi.
Rebekka shares the story on her Facebook page:
“I decided to ask the other flight attendant if I could move up 2 rows where there were 2 empty seats next to each other and I'd have more room to do stuff. She said yes and next thing I know I was sitting next to this amazing woman!”
That woman was Nyfesha Miller, who can’t believe the reaction her kindness has received on social media – more than 98k shares, 600+ likes and 125 comments.
According to Rebekka, Nyfesha offered to hold Rylee and try to calm her.
“As soon as she had her, Rylee was looking out the window and stopped crying. When we got in the air she fell right asleep and slept in her lap the whole flight until we got to our gate.”
And Nyfesha didn’t just hand her back and go on her way once the flight was over. She carried Rylee off the plane so Rebekka could get her stroller and carseat put back together.
Rebekka was understandably very grateful to the kind stranger, and took a couple of photos of her magic effect on Rylee.
And she left a note to Nyfesha to thank her: “You could've just rolled your eyes and been irritated like everyone else, but you took her and held her the entire flight and let me get some rest and peace of mind. It brought tears to my eyes while I sat there and watched you and Rylee sleeping next to me.”
With the post going viral, Nyfesha soon learnt of her fame and shared her surprise at the reaction of her kindness.
“I'm absolutely blown away by the amazing response this has received. Just comes to show you how little acts of kindness really do go a long way.”
Unfortunately you can't always guarantee that you'll be sitting next to someone like Nyfesha, so if you're about to take your first flight with a baby, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Dress baby in layers so you can adjust to a comfortable temperature
- Try to book flights to accommodate your baby's sleep routine - just be careful not to let them get overtired
- Similarly, if you can time her feed with take-off/landing, this will help equalise her ears
- A sling or pouch for baby will help keep your hands free to carry luggage and avoid dropping anything (including baby!)
- Some airlines have basinettes available for baby to sleep in, so check with your airline
