Departing from Dunedin's beautiful railway station the Taieri Gorge Railway begins its scenic journey into some of New Zealand's most ever-changing, spectacular and iconic scenery. The train travels through the Southern parts of Dunedin city until it arrives at Wingatui junction where it turns off onto the Taieri branch. From here the train sneaks across the Taieri Plains and climbs into the Taieri Gorge, a narrow and deep gorge carved out over aeons by the ancient Taieri River.
The train negotiates the gorge with ease as it travels through ten tunnels and over countless bridges and viaducts - make sure you count them!!
On this train, kids ride free with an adult but make sure you book! This is a popular tour and often gets booked out.
The Seasider trip runs north of Dunedin on a section of railway which is considered a highlight in the rail network in New Zealand.
Departing from the magnificent railway station in downtown Dunedin, this train travels along the edge of the Otago harbour, considered one of the most picturesque in the world, before climbing the gentle slopes above the port town of Port Chalmers.
Over the hill the train emerges onto the dazzling splendor or Blueskin Bay revealing beautiful views over bays, inlets and beaches to reach the busy highway town of Palmerston. The train then continues north passing through farm land and more coastal scenery. There is a brief stop to allow people to disembark at Moeraki before the train continues through coastal farmland before arriving in Oamaru at 12.30pm.
Along the way, we slow down at points of particular beauty or interest, giving you the opportunity to get that perfect photo.
