Getting sorted for Pancake Day
Why do we celebrate Pancake Day ?
Shrove Tuesday (also known as Pancake Day) is a day traditionally celebrated by Christians and is observed the day before the beginning of Lent (Ash Wednesday). It falls in late February or early March depending on the Easter dates.
A key requirement of the Lent period is self-denial and fasting. In order to use up rich foods such as eggs, milk and sugar before Lent, pancakes were made, hence the name Pancake Day.
Tips and tricks for pancake making
Here are some of the best pancake recipes around - but remember pancakes take longer than pikelets as you generally only cook one at a time.
If you want your pancakes to be extra light and fluffy, whip the egg whites and fold them into the mix (don't forget to add the yolks too). When cooking them, make sure there are at least 10 popped bubbles on the top surface before you flip them.
You will have to play around with the heat so they don't burn but also don't take too long to cook.
