Black bottomed cupcakes recipe

These delicious two tone cupcakes have a chocolatey bottom filled with chocolate chips and a top made from cheesecake mix. Pop them in the oven for a grown up afternoon tea.



  • 250g cream cheese
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract


Preheat oven to 180°C. Line a 12 cup tray with patty pans.

In a small bowl, mix the cream cheese, egg, sugar and pinch of salt until well combined and set aside.

In a medium mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa, baking soda and teaspoon of salt and stir in the sugar.

Mix in the oil, water, vinegar and vanilla. Stir through the chocolate chips.

Fill patty pans with half of the chocolate mixture. Top with a large dollop of the cream cheese mixture.

Bake for 20-25 minutes.
