Calamari fritti recipe

Calamari fritti is a great way to introduce the family to seafood. The kids will love dipping these squid rings in sauce with chips. Find more on Kidspot New Zealand.



  • 500g fresh squid tubes
  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  •  vegetable oil for deep frying


Rinse the squid tubes in cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Cut the tubes across the body at 5mm intervals.

In a bowl, combine the flour, cayenne pepper and paprika.

Toss the squid tubes in the flour mix and fry in hot oil until golden.

Serve with roasted garlic and lime aioli and homestyle chunky chips.


  • These calamari have a very light crumb and you can make it spicier by adding more cayenne pepper.
