Chapati (Indian flatbread) recipe

This chapati flatbread recipe is very simple and easy to make. It's the perfect accompaniment to Indian meals and makes great wraps and rolls for lunches. Find more on Kidspot New Zealand.

  • 1 cup wholemeal flour
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 tbsp water

In a bowl, sift the flour and salt together.

Stir in the olive oil and water until it forms a dough. Knead until smooth and elastic. This takes about 8-10 minutes.

Divide dough into 4 even balls. Use a rolling pin to roll out as flat as possible.

Heat a heavy based frying pan over a medium heat. Fry the dough disks for 1 minute each side.

  • You will not need to oil the frying pan before you cook these. They have enough oil in the dough to stop them sticking.
  • You can replace the water with yoghurt or milk if you want a softer chapati.
  • These chapati will puff up like little flying saucers and sink when removed from the heat.
  • I like to double this batch and roll the extra flatbread up with salads and cold meats for lunch boxes.
