Sloppy Joes recipe

Sloppy Joes is traditional American fare and works very well when you have to feed a crowd. Just pop it into the slow cooker to keep warm. Find more on Kidspot New Zealand.

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 500g beef mince
  • 1 brown onion, diced
  • 1/2 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1/2 sp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper

In a frying pan, heat the oil and add mince and onion. Cook, stirring, until mince is browned.

Drain any excess fat from the pan. Add tomato sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, salt and pepper.

Bring to the boil. Cover and simmer on a low heat for 15 minutes.

Serve on soft hamburger buns with a side salad.

  • Draining the excess fat makes this dish a much healthier option. I leave the fat to sit in a bowl and scrape it into the bin later. You will be amazed at how much you discard.
  • I used balsamic vinegar but you can substitute with any vinegar that you have on hand.
